Alonso-Vazquez, Mackie-Cooper conquer RedPADEL’s Circuit #1 in Miami

Peter Alonso-Martinez and Juan Manuel Vazquez captured the first RedPADEL Circuit victory of the year in the Men’s (D1), while Riva Mackie and Annica Cooper won the Women's (D1) contest in a three-set thriller.

With 77 teams and 156 players competing at the glorious blue courts of Padel X in Miami across three days, the tournament showcased some of Padel's finest players Alonso (RPR 19.66), Vazquez (RPR 17.80), Maximiliano Rozas (RPR 17.44), Luis Estrada (RPR 17.77), Geronimo Barrios Silva (RPR 16.63) and Simon Castello (RPR 16.37).

In the Men’s D1 Final, Alonso-Vazquez won 6-0, 6-4, beating Rozas-Estrada, and opened their RedPADEL season with a victory. Alonso remains undefeated in RedPADEL events. Since February 2023, the Spaniard has won 20 matches without a loss, with a 40-2 win-loss record for sets, winning 72.3 percent of his games (251-96).

For his partner, this was the first RedPADEL event for Vazquez, who is a professional padel and has spent time on the World Padel Tour and playing in the Pro Padel League. He moved to 12th on RedPADEL’s Leaderboard with a 48-19 games record.

Alonso-Vazquez started their charge to the Men’s D1 Final on  Friday, with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Juan Arraya and JoseDe Armas. In the Quarter Final they beat Mateo Coles and Guillermo Canas 6-2, 6-3. And in the Semi Final they won 6-2, 6-3 over Raul Ruiz and Nicolas Clerc.

In the Women’s D1 Final, the duo of Mackie-Cooper beat Luicelena Perez and Clementina Riobueno in three sets, including a tight third set 6-3, 2-6, 7-6. Cooper, a former UCLA tennis player, overcame the heat – 90F – and humidity in the second set to incredibly come back and win the third 7-6. The pair won their first round encounter 6-0, 7-5 against Alvarez-Miquel.

After winning Women’s Division 1, Mackie (11.57 RPR), said she had never paired up with Cooper (9.69 RPR) prior to Circuit#1 and that the final match was a true padel match.

“It was amazing to be on the court and be part of it. We had to fight super hard,” Mackie said. “My partner was almost out at the beginning of the first set and had to be a super warrior to stay in the game with me. I had a blast on court.”

Mackie, who also said she struggled in the heat, played three games in one day but was able to recover and hold steady to win the first RedPADEL Circuit with Cooper. Mackie is now 8th on the RedPADEL Women’s Leaderboard.

“I want to say thank you to the people who gave me an IV yesterday. I was in the same position as Annica. Shout out to the IV!” she said. “To Nalle and his team here at Padel X, we had a blast. The environment has been amazing the whole weekend. It’s because of the space that they’ve created.”

Co-founder of Padel X, Nalle Grinda, said more than 500 padel fans came through the gates to watch the competition play over the weekend.

“It’s been quite an amazing experience. Especially since we set this up in a couple of weeks. We’re very proud of being – I believe – the largest tournament ever played on US soil,” he said. “For all the padel lovers, we're really proud of having them and hosting them here today, seeing the matches, so we’re very very happy with the first event.”

Men’s D1 Finalists Rozas-Estrada went through two tough three-set matches to get to semi-finals where they found their form and won in convincing fashion against Barrios Silva and Castello. They also battled against Trapote and Rodriguez in the Quarter Finals , winning in a tiebreak in the second set after dropping the first, with Rodriguez and Trapote both playing at a very high level.

  • Juan Arraya and Jose De Armas got a tough first round match-up in the main draw facing the eventual champions in Alonso Martinez and Vazquez. Arraya and De Armas went on to win the D1 backdraw against Castillo and Gonzalez in a thrilling three-set final.
